Betsy DeVos is one of the most polarizing figures in American education. She has been a champion for educational reform since her appointment in 2016 by President Trump. She beat out a number of other candidates and started up quite a bit of controversial discussions over the future of public school systems. DeVos believes that educational choice is the way that students can get through the American education system without having to deal with failing schools.
However, in a recent interview with “60 Minutes,” DeVos was interviewed by Leslie Stahl. He asked her questions pertaining to the successfulness of the programs. She responded with the fact that it has only been a couple of years since she took office and began implementing educational choice in certain states. Not all states have been very receptive to the program. She blames it on a lack of understanding as to what they are trying to do for children who are underprivileged and want to go to a better schools when they are stuck in a bad school zone.
Educational choice allows students to pick what school they want to go to. It doesn’t have to be a private school, but it is one of the options in an educational choice program. Most programs allow you to pick a homeschool, virtual school, magnet program, or charter school to switch to. In Florida and in some other states, vouchers and scholarships are available. DeVos says that she is most proud of Florida which has a tuition-based scholarship program.
Many of the students who are now in educational choice programs are benefiting from the experience. Going to a failing school has its share of problems, which is why students need a better curriculum. DeVos believes that educational choice is that option.
However, there are those who also worry about public funding going to private schools. DeVos says that most of the funding for private schools and vouchers currently comes from philanthropists like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Walton. DeVos has also donated frequently to private schools and voucher programs as she wants students to have what they need to go to a good school.
The road has been a long one for US Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. She has fought much of it by the side of her husband, Dick DeVos. Together they have also opened a charter school for aviation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The school trains students to become pilots.
Now that DeVos has entered her third year, she has also been appointed to take on other issues such as school safety and gun violence reform. She has been talking to lawmkers about what should be done in the classroom to make it safer. For that, there are few answers but Devos will not divulge just yet.
